How to Make Cell based Therapeutics a Real Business Opportunity
Cell based therapies have been available for many years, but until recently, none have been profitable. Advanced Tissue Sciences was one of the first skin replacement companies but had problems developing a business around the technology. It has recently re-emerged as Advanced BioHealing, which is on the cusp of profitability, and looks like it’s got it right. Osiris has over the years, developed, and now commercialized its mesenchymal “cells in a bottle” and is now marketing product and establishing sales. What lies on the horizon for other cell based therapeutic companies? How can these medically valuable therapies be leveraged to become profitable? What additional challenges do stem cell based therapies face, and last but not least, will embryonic stem cells be a business reality in our time. Both Annemarie Moseley, former CEO Osiris, and Jeanne Bertonis, formerly of Genzyme, have firsthand experience in this space.
