Creating Virtual Value – a $527 Million Buyout of Angiosyn by Pfizer. David Mack from Alta Partners will talk about the very successful development of Angiosyn and its sale to Pfizer. He will be joined by Ian Edvalson, who helped broker the transaction with Pfizer

  • David Mack, Partner, Alta Partners.

    David Mack joined Alta in 2002. David’s first Alta investment was Angiosyn (acquired by Pfizer in 2005) where he was Director and acting CEO. He is currently on the board of directors of Aerie Pharmaceuticals, Ceregene and Proacta.

    Prior to Alta, David co-founded and served as vice president of Genomics Research at Eos Biotechnology (acquired by Protein Design Labs in 2003). From 1995 to 1997, he served at Affymetrix as Head of Cancer Biology where he oversaw the development and application of DNA array technology in the areas of oncology and inflammation. David was also a pivotal member of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) invention group at Cetus (now Chiron) in the mid 1980s.

    David has co-authored more than 30 scientific articles and reviews, including papers published in Cell, Science and Nature, and he is an inventor on 21 US patents.

    He was an American Cancer Society postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine in Microbiology and Immunology. David received his Ph.D. in 1992 from the University of Chicago where he was a Howard Hughes fellow in Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology. David holds a Bachelor of Arts in Molecular Biology from University of California, Berkeley.

  • Ian Edvalson , Partner, WSGR

    Ian Edvalson is a partner in Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati's Palo Alto and San Diego offices. He assists private and public companies in creating and implementing strategies to optimize their technology and other assets, advising them on a variety of legal and business issues. Ian represents clients in domestic and international transactions involving intellectual property or product rights, such as collaboration, development, manufacture, supply and distribution agreements, technology acquisitions, university licenses, and the formation of joint ventures and other types of strategic alliances.

    Ian has a wide variety of business and legal experience covering a full range of issues and transactions facing technology companies, particularly in the biopharmaceutical and life sciences industries. He works closely with his clients in setting strategic direction and structuring and negotiating mission-critical business arrangements.

    Prior to rejoining the firm in 2002, Ian was senior vice president of corporate and business development at Third Wave Technologies, Inc., where he was responsible for implementing and managing its product development and licensing strategies for both research and clinical markets. Additionally, he played a significant role in Third Wave's financing strategy (including its February 2001 IPO) and developing and maintaining significant customer and collaborator relationships. Because of Ian's company-based experience, he is particularly attuned to issues faced by emerging company clients.
